Gilbane wins Navy remediation contract

Gilbane Environmental has won a US Navy contract for soil remediation at the former Hunters Point Naval Shipyard in San Francisco.

It will develop the design and carry out remedial work to deal with soil contamination within portions of Parcel E at the former shipyard.

Gilbane has worked at Hunters Point for over 15 years and is working with the Navy to transfer the base to the city of San Francisco.

The US$26m project includes conducting an excavation at the shoreline; constructing shoreline protection features to protect the backfilled excavation; implementation of in-situ stabilization; constructing a groundwater-containment slurry wall; maintaining radiological controls in work areas; and performing waste characterization and stockpiling for disposal or reuse.

The contract period is 36 months.
