Unsafe trench brings $106k fine for Boise contractor

The Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) is proposing $106,000 in fines for a contractor that failed to follow safe trenching practices.

Alta Construction, Inc. has been cited for one willful and two serious violations. In May, OSHA inspected the company’s site after receiving two complaints of unsafe trenching operations. Inspectors found employees inside a 7-foot-deep trench without cave-in protection.

“Fortunately no one was injured, but it is imperative that companies use protective systems in trenches to keep their workers safe,” said OSHA area director David Kearns.

The company has 15 business days from receipt of its citations and penalties to comply, request an informal conference with OSHA’s area director, or contest the findings before the independent Occupational Safety & Health Review Commission.
