The money from the US Department of Transportation is first tranche of a total US$3.2bn in Airport Improvement Program (AIP) funding for airports across country.

The 241 grants will fund 346 infrastructure projects that include runways, taxiways, aprons, and terminals.

“These Airport Improvement Program grants will enhance airport safety, modernize our aviation infrastructure and strengthen the economic vitality of communities throughout the country,” said transportation secretary Elaine Chao.

Among those receiving the new grant awards are:

  • King Salmon Airport in King Salmon, AK, US$12.8m for repairs to the runway and taxiway;
  • HL (Sonny) Callahan Airport in Fairhope, AL, US$3m to construct a taxiway;
  • Northwest Arkansas Regional Airport in Fayetteville/Springdale/Rogers in AR, US$13.6m to repair a taxiway;
  • Denver International Airport in Denver, CO, US$14.2m, allocated as several grants to projects to repair runways, taxiways, and runway and taxiway lighting;
  • Liberal Mid-America, Salina Regional and Wichita Dwight D Eisenhower National Airports in KS, US$3m - the three airports will either receive snow removal equipment or aircraft rescue and firefighting equipment.
