Balfour Beatty starts work on Californian school

Balfour Beatty US has broken ground on a US$39m project at Skyline School in Solana Beach, California.

Together with the project architect, Davy Architecture, Balfour Beatty presented a donation to the Solana Beach Schools Foundation to help pay for a future garden shed located on the school’s property.

Balfour Beatty is providing lease-lease back services to oversee the demolition and reconstruction of the new 75,239-square-foot facility. The project includes a two-story classroom building with 27 classrooms, a media center, technology lab, art room and space for administration and student services. Other aspects include a kindergarten building with four classrooms and a building for science, technology, research, engineering, arts and math. Also within the project scope are 9.6 acres of site improvements such as an amphitheatre, garden areas and ball courts.

The new Skyline School will also include several energy conservation features:

  • an energy management system with occupancy sensors in all classrooms and meeting spaces;
  • air conditioning and heating units that only run during school hours at energy-efficient temperature ranges;
  • energy-efficient light fixtures and air conditioning units;
  • solar panels installed in the parking lot and the lunch shelter area.
