Caterpillar launches its first utility vehicles

Caterpillar has launched its first-ever utility vehicles (UTVs).

The gasoline-powered Cat CUV82 and diesel-powered CUV102D have been developed from scratch, drawing on customer and dealer input with the aim of building a UTV that delivers durability and comfort with simple maintenance.

The CUV82 and CUV102D offer 1,000lb (454kg) total rear cargo capacity and 2,000lb (907kg) towing capacity. They have a four-wheel independent suspension system and a front sway bar to provide stability at full load. Other features include a long swing-arm suspension, custom-tuned springs and shocks and ground clearance that is designed for navigating rough terrain.

The new Cat can reach speeds of reaching 45mph, depending on the model.

Caterpillar said that features such as smooth acceleration, clear sightlines and engine braking capability make the UTVs well suited for hauling and towing. Both models feature a continuously variable transmission, tuned specifically for work applications. The choice of two-wheel drive, four-wheel drive or four-wheel drive/lock modes permits the driver to matchthe  vehicle drive to ground conditions.

The CUV82 and CUV102D can two riders side-by-side with ample leg, elbow and headroom for tall riders, said Caterpillar. Behind-the-seat storage and a document holder provide space for personal items and gear. The passenger seat base can be removed and stowed behind the driver seat to create floor space for hauling oversized items.

Customers can customize their Cat UTVs to meet specific needs through more than 50 accessory options. Multiple cab options with sealed surfaces on the ROPS structure provide a weathertight enclosure, while other offerings include snow plows, a heater and front winch. Cat UTVs are prewired for quick do-it-yourself installation of all options.

The UTV models will be available throughout the United States and Canada, excluding California and Quebec.
