Contract approved for new Morgan-Sullivan Bridge

Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) has approved a US$21.5m project to replace the Morgan-Sullivan Bridge on Route 147.

The bridge carries traffic on Memorial Avenue (Route 147) over the Westfield River between West Springfield and Agawam. It was originally constructed in 1945 but is now structurally deficient; it is safe for travel but in need of further attention.

“We have appreciated the input and support from our municipal partners and are pleased to move forward with this project which will replace this structurally deficient bridge and add many new accommodations including dedicated vehicle turning lanes, separated bicycle lanes, and increased capacity on both sides of the bridge to improve travel,” said highway administrator Jonathan Gulliver.

Construction operations are expected to begin this summer and the project is scheduled to be completed by summer 2022. The full scope of work includes replacing the bridge and reconstructing sections of the surrounding roadways.

The project will add multimodal features including a protected bicycle lane on the east side of the bridge. New sidewalks, designated bicycle crossings, vehicle turn lanes, traffic controls and drainage system modifications will also be installed.
