Gilbane to turn historic Orlando building into community center

Gilbane has won a design-build contract for the Grand Avenue Community Center in Orlando, Florida.

The City of Orlando project will create a youth and family recreation center through the expansion and renovation of a 1926 building in the Mediterranean Revival architecture style.

The restoration project is being carried out by the design-build team of Gilbane Building Company, Borrelli and Partners, and JCB Construction team.

The building, which was designated as an historic landmark in 1995, was originally constructed as a school. It will now be repurposed as a youth and family recreation center and house the services provided by the city’s Downtown Recreation Complex. The project includes 30,000 sq ft of renovations and new construction with an addition of a gymnasium.

“Our team is proud to be part of this historic landmark project," says Robert Hayes, senior vice president, Gilbane Building Company. “We are excited to be working closely with the City of Orlando on the preservation and restoration of this building and to see it be able to continue to serve the community in such an impactful way.”

The new center will offer the full range of after-school and summer programs. The design and construction phases are capped at a 900-day schedule for completion.
