Green light for rail upgrade at Savannah port

Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) has approved projects to expand the port at Savannah, including work as part of the creation of a 'mega' rail terminal.

The rail and gate expansion projects will significantly increase capacity at GPA’s Garden City Terminal. When complete, GPA's Mason Mega Rail Terminal will double the rail lift capacity to a million containers per year.

GPA's board has this week approved expenditures of US$42.27m as part of the US$128m Mason Mega Rail Terminal. The project will double the port’s on-dock rail capacity and position Savannah to increase service to an arc of inland markets from Memphis to Chicago.

A total of US$90.7m has now been allocated to the project. Construction is set to begin next month and be completed by the end of 2020.

The board also approved a US$13.2m project to expand the existing Gate 8 at Garden City Terminal.
