HDR to carry out final design of record-braking Miami bridge

HDR has announced that it is to lead the final design of a public-private partnership (P3) scheme to build a signature bridge and reconstruct a 1.4-mile section of I-395 in Miami.

The structure will be the largest precast concrete segmental arch bridge in North America. The the signature bridge will be named the Fountain, and it will span 1,025 feet across two busy roads. Its largest arch will rise 325 feet above the ground and span 650 feet across, making it the third-largest precast concrete segmental arch in the world, behind bridges in France and Australia.

The cost for the entire project is US$803 million, and it is being procured through a P3 between Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) and the Miami-Dade Expressway Authority (MDX). The contract was awarded to the joint venture Connecting Miami, made up of Archer-Western and the de Moya Group.

HDR is to serve as the JV’s engineer of record for the signature bridge as well as other aspects of the scheme.

The bridge is expected to open in 2022.
